I made this simple pattern because potty training coming up soon (eek) I wanted to have plenty of pants that my son could easily take on and off himself. My boy is 2 and a half but he is big for his age so I bet this would probably be a 3T size
All you need is an old T-shirt. You can find them really cheap (like 50 cents at a good thrift store)
Print and piece together the pdf pattern. Which is embedded at the end of this post.
To save a little sewing time I used the hem of T-Shirt as the hem of the pants. If you don’t you might need to add a little length for a hem (or just don’t hem them) I also cut the pattern with the T-Shirt inside out so that I can’t just go straight to machine with the right sides together.
Pin and sew the two crotch edges together I used my serger with a four thread serger but you could also use a 1/4 in seam allowance and then do a zigzag on the edge.
Fold your pants so the crotch seams meet. Pin and sew up one leg and down the other.
Fold down the waistband an inch and sew a elastic casing. Be sure to leave an opening to feed your elastic through.
feed the elastic through the casing. Safety pin the elastic and then try it on. Adjust as necessary.
Sew your elastic together and then finish sewing the casing.
That’s it. You are finished! you can do them plain but I’ve had fun with some graphic T-Shirts.
I can get a few pairs of these done during a nap. The are quick and simple and comfortable.
These pants seem so comfy that I’m thinking of making myself a pair. I’m going to need a really big T-shirt
If you make your own we would love to see it. Please add it to our flickr group
the download works just fine for me!
ReplyDeleteJust found this tutorial on pinterest - such a great idea, and how comfy! Loving those Dr Seuss pants!
ReplyDeleteSo I am VERY new to sewing i guess you could say BEGINNER. If I wanted to make these a little bt longer would i just add a little bit of length to the E and F pattern??
ReplyDeletethat is exactly what I've done. Ash is a year older and the only modification I've made is to add an extra 3 inches to the bottom.
DeleteCould you please email me a copy of the pattern, the pdf didn't work for me, thanks.
ReplyDeleteI just embedded the pattern at the bottom of the post. Please let me know if that works for you
DeleteFinally found the PDF pattern to print and now I'm looking forward to making for my grandson. His inseam is 14" at the present time so I'm guessing I'll need to add some inches to the pattern. If so, would you recommend using a very long t-shirt or using more than one to create a different look?
ReplyDeleteIf you can find an extra long t-shirt it can save you a step. I've done it both ways and both look cute. I've also added inches to the length as my son has grown. I haven't had to modify much more than that.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your input. I was thinking of looking out for a tall man's t-shirt. I'll round up a t-shirt and give it a try to see how it does for him and keep you posted.
DeleteThanks for the pattern! I just made two while my boys napped. I'm still a fairly green seamstress and this was easy and I enjoyed making something that is useful, and cool to boot.
ReplyDeleteSo stinkin' cute! I just made some for my 3-year-old son with an old Arizona State t-shirt. His grandpa will be tickled when he sees his grandson sporting a shirt from his alma mater! Thanks for the great tutorial. Might be helpful to remind beginners (like me) to use a ball-point needle. I remembered about halfway through the first seam and the results improved dramatically after that. : )
ReplyDeleteOKAY i Am not sure if I am just challenged or what but I am unable to get to the pattern can you please send me the patteren my email is cmp9867@gmail.com thank you. Hubby got me a new machince and I wanted to make this first>
ReplyDeleteCarol
I love these pants! Is there any way you could email a copy of the pattern? The link no longer works and I would love to make these out of my husband's vintage t-shirts! Thanks!!!

I don't find a link to the pattern. Can I still get it? Thanks twila@pldi.net
ReplyDeleteCan't find the link to the pattern. Still available?
ReplyDeleteI found the link to the pattern, duh? Can't wait to make some!!
ReplyDeleteSorry for the delay. I resaved the lounge pants pattern and linked it above in the second paragraph. Please let me know if you still have trouble getting it. It seems that when google docs changed to google drive, some of our document links went wonky. Thanks for your patience and enjoy the pattern!
ReplyDeleteDo you have a pattern for adult pants?
ReplyDeleteI can't download the pattern, could you send it to my e-mail address: imjoche@hotmail.com
