October has got to be the most exhausting month for sewing. This year our kids were old enough that we really didn't have a say on what they were going to be. In some ways it made it easier. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Cam was adamant about being a S.W.A.T. officer. The helmet has been in the dress up box for years and the vest was borrowed from a friend. Nothing homemade at all.</div>

Haley tried to convince Clara to be Elsa from the Frozen Fever short because that dress is gorgeous but she wasn't having it. She insisted on Minnie Mouse which is a much easier costume. The shirt was from Goodwill and just needed the collar to be swapped for a white one. She also had a simple Circle skirt with a double tulle and an elastic waist. The ears were from Joanns.<br />
<br />
Since she saved so much time on the kid's costumes she went overboard on her own. Haley and B have been wanting to do Mary Poppins for a while so this was the year.<br />
<br />
<i>Note to Haley: Today you said that next year you are reusing an old costume. I know come October 2016 when we are in the crazy place again, you'll change your mind and make something ridiculous but I'm putting this on record, only the kids next year.</i><br />

Haley's Dress is a combination of 3 patterns for the corset, inner bodice and rest of dress. she used chiffon on the outer dress and did a self lined satin inner bodice with spaghetti straps. She threaded red ribbon through a lace trim for the accents and had stitched the bows on the skirt.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Haley used painter's tape to mark off the stripes and used fabric or multi-surface craft paint to make the jacket fabric. The pattern was from the 80's. Other accessories were pilfered from her Mom's costume closet.<span style="text-align: center;"> </span></div>

Ruben has been wanting to be Rainbow Dash for months since he saw a friends doll. He didn't even see the show until he got sick last week and I really needed to work on our costumes. Both boys are in love. My sweet and easy going husband agreed to go as Apple Jack. You can't tell in this picture but I did paint apples on his butt. <span style="text-align: center;">Ru's costume was inspired by </span><a href="http://blog.megannielsen.com/2013/07/the-rainbow-dash-costume/" style="text-align: center;" target="_blank">this one</a></div>

Ash also made it easy on me and insisted on being Link from Legend of Zelda; Skyward Sword. I made him the tunic two years ago and he didn't want me to make a new one so I bought his a sword from <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/BlackSwanArmoury?ref=l2-shopheader-name" target="_blank">Black Swan Armoury</a> and made him a scabbard for it. He also got some boots from Old Navy and ears made of masking tape. </div>

Well, it has been a whirlwind of learning, product portfolio building, sewing room time and it all culminates THIS WEEKEND! Holy cow, I’m so nervous!<br />
<br />
Ruth isn’t nearly as nervous as me, which is why we make a good team. Anyway, Hammer and Thread, along with 70 other local Austin crafters, will be presenting the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/1424622111131298/" target="_blank">Austin Craft Riot Summer Show</a>, this Saturday and Sunday, August 16 & 17 from 11-6 both days. It’s $2 per adult to get in and FREE for kids. In addition to the awesome vendors, there’ll be a huge kids activity area with arts & crafts, games and prizes.<br />
<br />
Hammer and Thread will be selling our famous lounge pants, recycled hoodies (yes, the <a href="http://lilblueboo.com/shop/products/Recycled-T%252dShirt-Hoodie-PDF-Pattern-and-Tutorial-%252d-Unisex-Sizes-6M-to-7-Years.html" target="_blank">Lil Blue Boo pattern!</a>), 3 sizes of snack/sandwich bags for your kiddo’s lunchbox, our NEW belts and NEW adventure pouches. The pouches slide onto any 1” belt and can hold whatever treasure your adventurer finds along the way. <br />

I know our blog has been very quiet lately, and now you know the reason. We now have an <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/HammerAndThreadShop" target="_blank">Etsy shop</a>, a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Hammerandthreadshop" target="_blank">Facebook page</a> and an Instagram account (@hammerandthreadshop), too!<br />
If you’re in Austin, please come see us and say hi! <br />

Since I had procrastinated all week watching Breaking Bad with my husband at night, Saturday morning I grabbed a cup of coffee and hit the sewing room.</p> <p>For the baby shower I made a 3 tiered skirt using my serger to do the gathering. It was a breeze. Too bad I don’t have girls or I would be cranking these out regularly. </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-3Q5RzlLmN3I/UxO8GCdGgSI/AAAAAAAAXMc/CCZaybagy6E/s1600-h/_DSC0569%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img title="_DSC0569" style="margin: 0px; display: inline" alt="_DSC0569" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-qoOve7xB8s4/UxO8G2CMqkI/AAAAAAAAXMk/fiM6Dxz3TMQ/_DSC0569_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="425"></a></p> <p>I also threw together an oversized flannel fox blanket with some handmade bias tape.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-BwP38U4EWF0/UxO8HqxdIfI/AAAAAAAAXMs/LagCJTenUFY/s1600-h/_DSC0582%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img title="_DSC0582" style="margin: 0px; display: inline" alt="_DSC0582" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-WNOV9uWo7R8/UxO8IcBGuhI/AAAAAAAAXM0/B7TjCiKXo7M/_DSC0582_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="425"></a></p> <p>Then for the 5 year old I made some old man pants. I picked up some ugly old thrifted plaid pants and used the Parsley pattern to make a much cuter pair of pants with some bright turquoise pockets.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-e50ksqVdFJI/UxO8JPEWluI/AAAAAAAAXM8/jrUYpOqiSbc/s1600-h/_DSC0591%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img title="_DSC0591" style="margin: 0px; display: inline" alt="_DSC0591" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-DpOpj5bUB8s/UxO8JlWNQrI/AAAAAAAAXNE/MXDQk__uufY/_DSC0591_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="425"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/--mobyZIEsLc/UxO8KrxpJEI/AAAAAAAAXNM/NOhGJ0VTsM0/s1600-h/_DSC0593%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img title="_DSC0593" style="margin: 0px; display: inline" alt="_DSC0593" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-mfdceb-H4y0/UxO8LoZqkNI/AAAAAAAAXNU/03s2mjRaTZY/_DSC0593_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="425"></a></p> <p>Not bad for a morning sewing session.</p> <p><img alt="Ruth" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_sw09_UT9jqE/TEuoNr0NQUI/AAAAAAAAC_w/OWzaznom5w0/Ruth_thumb%5B3%5D.jpg?imgmax=800"></p> <div class="blogger-post-footer">Thanks for subscribing</div>Ruth @ Hammer and Threadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15532776517977223810noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4400651514450791549.post-27710436947788176262014-02-03T19:58:00.001-06:002014-02-03T20:00:21.536-06:00Hammer and Thread in person<p>Last September, we attended our first ever craft fair here in Austin. We had been discussing this for a few months and finally the timing worked out for us to sew up a large amount of our Lounge Pants and design a set of reusable snack bags to sell. We attended 4 fairs between September and December and it was a good learning experience for us. Two of the four events had major weather issues and the other two were very small. All in all, we did not have the sales success we had hoped for, but we now understand the logistics involved in selling our wares. Here are a few photos from our booths.</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-i7YLjKx5zX4/UvBI9Q1K5HI/AAAAAAAAHfg/qewpXVtcojc/s1600-h/IMG_1009%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="IMG_1009" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline" border="0" alt="IMG_1009" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-JjP2QKjZy9c/UvBI-BP3LVI/AAAAAAAAHfo/MSQTeR9-oPI/IMG_1009_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="484"></a> </p> <p>This is the set of snack bags we designed. Sandwich, snack and cupholder size. tie so we have had a hard time with homemade gifts in the past. But the Daddy in
this house is a major doodler and Asher is a huge fan of art and they will sit
together on the weekend and draw pictures for each other. So this year for
father’s day we decided to make daddy a personalized sketchbook.<br />

This was a easy one to do in an afternoon. I took off the covers, put a couple layers of Gesso on them and then let Ash paint to his heart's content. Once that was dry we used sharpie paint makers to finish it off. Then I put the covers back on. Easy peasy. Just for fun I also took a digital flipbook.</div>

Sadly they were to small for Ash but for that price I had to get them anyway. Turns out they were the perfect size for Cam but I still wanted something similar for my kiddo. </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-2qwoHLpKI1g/UaEW6RLqJyI/AAAAAAAAQS4/Aiv3dQU21_U/s1600-h/_DSC0122%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="_DSC0122" border="0" alt="_DSC0122" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-3gXSmBFKg08/UaEW7K-WlfI/AAAAAAAAQTA/vA2YNmXRuuM/_DSC0122_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="429"></a></p> <p>I bought another pair of shoes from Target and used a <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Roller-Fabric-Permanent-Black-BN15BPA/dp/B001K7MW26/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1369511200&sr=8-1&keywords=pentel+gel+roller+for+fabric" target="_blank">Pentel Gel Roller</a> to doodled all over them.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-mH6i665KFic/UaEW7gIl-sI/AAAAAAAAQTI/s9sY9dRBkx4/s1600-h/_DSC0375%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="_DSC0375" border="0" alt="_DSC0375" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Y55RKMW2Bkk/UaEW8bcgIEI/AAAAAAAAQTQ/gPr5lEfkAKs/_DSC0375_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="429"></a></p> <p>I’m thinking about coloring them in with my <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Derwent-Inktense-Watersoluble-Pencils--Colors/dp/B000GWE8TQ/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1369511458&sr=8-9&keywords=ink+fabric+pencil" target="_blank">Inktense pencils</a> but that might be over doing it. I knew that I wanted to make one of <a href="http://www.noodle-head.com/2013/01/divided-basket-pattern.html" target="_blank">noodlehead’s divided baskets</a> and I was especially excited because it gave me an excuse to use some fabric from the <a href="http://www.robertkaufman.com/fabrics/architextures/" target="_blank">Architextures</a> line. I fell in love with this fabric at QuiltCon a few months back. I was thrilled to see a line that is definitely boy and not babyish at all. The bricks aren’t part of the Architextures fabric line but I felt that it fit the style and theme really well.<br />
<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-RdmZEBuRSNk/UYiFMU8HJlI/AAAAAAAAQPk/zBBuTHzNYG8/s1600-h/_DSC0220%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="_DSC0220" border="0" height="429" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-L2lGXoDpwLc/UYiFOLUp8_I/AAAAAAAAQPs/4coI3AruC_M/_DSC0220_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="_DSC0220" width="644" /></a><br />
This was my first time with the divided basket pattern and I’m really glad I picked this one up. I’ve always been interested in the geometry and construction of my products and this one was not a disappointment.<br />
<a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-RDKB0_s01aM/UYiFVoXmjCI/AAAAAAAAQPw/Q4g-afd-GDQ/s1600-h/_DSC0223%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img alt="_DSC0223" border="0" height="429" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-hzWGeIJek5c/UYiFZsi733I/AAAAAAAAQP4/NdKDOrX7lH8/_DSC0223_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="_DSC0223" width="644" /></a><br />
I also whipped together one of her <a href="http://www.noodle-head.com/2010/05/diaper-pouch-tutorial.html" target="_blank">diaper pouches</a> cause they are great to throw in your purse or at your husband when he takes the baby. <br />

Upon checking my Pinterest holiday folder, I rediscovered <a href="http://forwhatitsworth-ornot.blogspot.com/2010/11/hot-cocoa-snowman-gift.html">this cute snowman</a> made of jars and containing marshmallows and hot cocoa mix. Fun! I think I pinned it in the summer, so I’m glad some rare forethought paid off. And since I have about a million baby food jars, this seemed like the perfect opportunity to use up something on hand.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-bvglIRJyogY/UNR6vKoQSLI/AAAAAAAAFac/dmyQDPXux00/s1600-h/DSC_0019%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="DSC_0019" border="0" alt="DSC_0019" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-HjCzkz3E_ow/UNR6v6-_DEI/AAAAAAAAFak/gp_eHiVUc58/DSC_0019_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="428"></a> </p> <p><em>Side note: my good camera is in the shop so I borrowed a friend’s Nikon…man, it’s a nice camera, but my off-camera flash doesn’t fit (obviously, since <strong>my</strong> camera is a Pentax) so my pictures are less than amazing. :P</em></p> <p> <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-K0Fa0KWv4MU/UNR6wntk_XI/AAAAAAAAFas/thbxYOSWI1Q/s1600-h/DSC_0020%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="DSC_0020" border="0" alt="DSC_0020" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-D1k0FxNTv7Y/UNR6yPQ-JkI/AAAAAAAAFa0/AbeIjUwSN-8/DSC_0020_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="314" height="472"></a> <a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-_RzEsM4PtmA/UNR6y4swZTI/AAAAAAAAFa8/nelIJnIwODY/s1600-h/DSC_0024%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="DSC_0024" border="0" alt="DSC_0024" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggcvxjrUWsP86_WY7E8t5vUeoP9fC_e0ee6Ht8nw4JDfeUSfblVVGM_qQWlFnVB9mZaeno3V4xWT4QKcvRnsRqsd51Ouk41uwxqFShGJ2NLjyznA2Tfh3rNye3MqizXgQhFmfZIJ25lXQ/?imgmax=800" width="314" height="472"></a> </p> <p>I followed the tutorial almost exactly. I hotglued the jars together, cut out little strips of Christmasy fabric for the scarves and glued on the buttons. I used Sharpie paint pens for the eyes, nose and mouth. For the hat, I changed it up a bit…the tutorial calls for paper but I had some black sparkle felt on hand so I cut the brim and the crown, fit them on the lid and hot glued them together so they can be removed as one piece. I cut out and glued a small circle to cover the lid and complete the hat. Done!</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Oc21TSUlhYY/UNR60k5Mk6I/AAAAAAAAFbM/wYBKo8cmWzg/s1600-h/DSC_0026%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="DSC_0026" border="0" alt="DSC_0026" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Wirtr1vjhOo/UNR61C_kTQI/AAAAAAAAFbU/CULOKD3JgQk/DSC_0026_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="428"></a> </p> <p>Hot cocoa mix is not rocket science, but I’m partial to my mom’s recipe which is a mixture of instant chocolate drink mix (we use Nesquik), dry milk, coffee creamer, powdered sugar and malt powder (if you like a malt flavor). As my mom says, “mix to taste”. This recipe is totally made up and can be altered however you like, I even added some cocoa powder cause I like a really rich chocolate flavor. </p> <p><strong>Mom’s Awesome Hot Cocoa Mix</strong></p> <p>In a gallon size baggie, toss in:</p> <p>2 cups Nesquik</p> <p>2 cups nonfat dry milk</p> <p>1 cup powdered sugar</p> <p>1/2 cup creamer</p> <p>1/2 cup malt powder (optional)</p> <p>Shake bag until mixed. Dip a wet finger into the powder and taste it. Alter taste by adding more milk (for less chocolate flavor) or adding more Nesquik or plain cocoa powder (for more chocolate flavor). </p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2KKKvPJv4ZOE66cesHF4FGVCTPMITJyXD9U0tVREVh84ZarndE3J4fSKDlUYSwNhkVtKimuPM1KZS11VQp8IVPX_9wsHx38biSIC8hbzD5qEgQeHaU1SxX0KXEJpUsbtPc3MJD6C5b0c/s1600-h/DSC_0028%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="DSC_0028" border="0" alt="DSC_0028" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-LBDQUvaeEt0/UNR62VhPv1I/AAAAAAAAFbk/I_F6v_aicSQ/DSC_0028_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="428"></a></p> <p>Enjoy!</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-vcj2s9r87vs/UNR63Pkr9vI/AAAAAAAAFbs/ooiGwO2SKBY/s1600-h/signature%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="signature" border="0" alt="signature" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-PO4L-7uDjUo/UNR64TX_osI/AAAAAAAAFb0/kgsmEacfDb0/signature_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="135" height="124"></a></p> <div class="blogger-post-footer">Thanks for subscribing</div>Haley @ Hammer and Threadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01990110910255713995noreply@blogger.com37tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4400651514450791549.post-32777242639016371332012-12-20T17:31:00.001-06:002012-12-20T17:31:15.188-06:00Library bag<p>This year I participated in a book club. It gave me a monthly break from being a full time parent and gave my mind some necessary exercise. The December meeting always includes a gift swap so I made this gorgeous bag entirely out of fabric from my stash.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-emcBkygxjWg/UNOfpyZaHXI/AAAAAAAAMTE/57oLK168nmY/s1600-h/Fabulous%252520book%252520bag%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="Fabulous book bag" border="0" alt="Fabulous book bag" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-BwooSR5oIkI/UNOfr2jSnQI/AAAAAAAAMTM/HW1NE8e9BFQ/Fabulous%252520book%252520bag_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="512" height="772"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-NkiltIU9LHU/UNOfsXHG7hI/AAAAAAAAMTU/u1wuHDdHBzc/s1600-h/fabulous%252520book%252520bag%252520%2525283%252529%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: left; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="fabulous book bag (3)" border="0" alt="fabulous book bag (3)" align="left" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-RZEBgEOD6xE/UNOftGMyhHI/AAAAAAAAMTc/dAhl0o_RG3A/fabulous%252520book%252520bag%252520%2525283%252529_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" width="163" height="244"></a>I had seen a similar bag somewhere, though I can’t find it now (probably pinterest.) It was basically made with long vertical strips of different prints and background fabric and then they are sewn together long the long edges to look like books. The leaning on was a challenge and there was probably a less wasteful way of doing it but I made a large rectangle lopped off a corner so the seam allowance would line up to make it look as if they were touching and then I trimmed the edges so it would make a large rectangle with the others. Then I added a top and bottom border.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-7Fz2cb8LjWo/UNOft90SwXI/AAAAAAAAMTk/ueNsVK1zTME/s1600-h/_DSC0193%25255B10%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin: 8px 0px 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="_DSC0193" border="0" alt="_DSC0193" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Llf31EaCgEc/UNOfusY5LXI/AAAAAAAAMTs/x_H5W5tMUiY/_DSC0193_thumb%25255B12%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="626" height="626"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-yri5tCqtNDQ/UNOfvJYHcFI/AAAAAAAAMT0/8q_OG20etAs/s1600-h/fabulous%252520book%252520bag%252520%2525282%252529%25255B24%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; margin: 0px 11px 0px 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: right; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="fabulous book bag (2)" border="0" alt="fabulous book bag (2)" align="right" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-arfVJVhXFRw/UNOfvQ8BbuI/AAAAAAAAMT8/8WRtJTrJIZk/fabulous%252520book%252520bag%252520%2525282%252529_thumb%25255B32%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="227" height="282"></a></p> <p> </p> <p>As much as I like the front the back is what I’m most proud of. It is just a large rectangle of the background fabric with the borders cut to the same dimensions as the front. </p> <p> </p> <p>I know it doesn’t look like much from a distance but let me zoom in for you</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-x05fsMHUa-Y/UNOfvxmnQ-I/AAAAAAAAMUE/mupBGh4wZmw/s1600-h/fabulous%252520book%252520bag%252520%2525282%252529%25255B19%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="fabulous book bag (2)" border="0" alt="fabulous book bag (2)" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-RLI3-nQxIFY/UNOfwqsaVJI/AAAAAAAAMUM/Fw2ymR-sqXU/fabulous%252520book%252520bag%252520%2525282%252529_thumb%25255B27%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="642" height="1048"></a></p> <p>I dropped the feed dogs and put on the darning foot and then wrote all the books that we read this year. Each row is a different month of books and if the month I filled in the space with the word read.</p> <p>I’m happy to report that the bag ended up with someone who truly deserved it. She has been in the group almost since the beginning. I have a feeling it will get plenty of love. Though I have to say I did consider trying to snag it myself.</p> <p><img alt="Ruth" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_sw09_UT9jqE/TEuoNr0NQUI/AAAAAAAAC_w/OWzaznom5w0/Ruth_thumb%5B3%5D.jpg?imgmax=800"></p> <div class="blogger-post-footer">Thanks for subscribing</div>Ruth @ Hammer and Threadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15532776517977223810noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4400651514450791549.post-11226813806395384862012-12-10T16:50:00.001-06:002012-12-10T16:50:08.559-06:00I-spy Swap Wrap-up<p>Your fabric squares are on their way! Here is a peak at my living room. My husband is going to freak when he gets home.</p> <p>Thanks to everyone who remembered to separate their fabrics into sets. I can’t tell you how many hours of work that saved me. </p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-a_cDpoNLClw/UMJG_wGUkBI/AAAAAAAAL7o/z8bGiXK2Q2g/s1600-h/_DSC0155%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="_DSC0155" border="0" alt="_DSC0155" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-1ELxpWvrNxE/UMJHBNcogFI/AAAAAAAAL7w/LIpKVLkXgdk/_DSC0155_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="570" height="1321"></a></p> <p>Hopefully the last package gets here today and I can send these out tomorrow. Cam had mentioned being an astronaut a few months ago and it was the only suggestion that I thought was do-able…any other time I asked him what he wanted to be it was always Lightning McQueen. Ugh! So we went with space…Clara was our alien princess, mommy was a starry sky and daddy was <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Ghost">Space Ghost</a>. </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-u25ClrvvqF0/UJr2o9QyuFI/AAAAAAAAEwc/MHXvmvaRMUc/s1600-h/IMGP6465edit%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="IMGP6465edit" border="0" alt="IMGP6465edit" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Ej6n4FkU6YA/UJr2qgC60QI/AAAAAAAAEwk/tNH5vmlPoz4/IMGP6465edit_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="516" height="772"></a></p> <p>For Cam’s costume, I went with a pattern, <a href="http://mccallpattern.mccall.com/m6417-products-14680.php?page_id=494">McCalls 6417</a>. It was simple and quick…a one-piece suit and a set of boot covers. Since I procrastinated the entire costume-making endeavor, I didn’t get authentic NASA patches ordered in time, so I painted my own using a Google image search and a steady hand. Ruth was in paper mache mode with Asher’s pteranodon head so she made Cam a space helmet…it’s a good thing she did, cause I had run out of time. It was hilariously oversized, but it made an excellent candy receptacle. He loved the costume!</p> <p> <a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-Vf7CIk91IPc/UJr2rRY47zI/AAAAAAAAEws/CTvPBJtDTC0/s1600-h/_DSC0290cam%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="_DSC0290cam" border="0" alt="_DSC0290cam" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-eBWlVj4VMkM/UJr2sTushrI/AAAAAAAAEw0/ZsqdEZlmiaY/_DSC0290cam_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="304" height="455"></a> <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-cZVfiDGEPeE/UJr2tVOTf5I/AAAAAAAAEw8/5vcX7i95Y-o/s1600-h/halloween%2525202012%252520here%252520and%252520austin%252520009%25255B9%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="halloween 2012 here and austin 009" border="0" alt="halloween 2012 here and austin 009" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-o_aXd8tilfc/UJr2ue1ZYHI/AAAAAAAAExA/XmljD7yd54o/halloween%2525202012%252520here%252520and%252520austin%252520009_thumb%25255B7%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="342" height="455"></a></p> <p>The icing on the cake was Cam’s rocket pack. Again, we were short on time so Ruth donated two perfectly shaped bottles and we taped them to a small plastic cutting board. I cut out some fancy felt flames and hot-glued them in. Voila!</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-6abAf6QaFKQ/UJr2vJ-X6DI/AAAAAAAAExI/36RRMADrxHM/s1600-h/IMGP6476edit%25255B14%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="IMGP6476edit" border="0" alt="IMGP6476edit" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqbkgdOVkp8G9qYMsxIwIAdvJL6QjNlJI8Lb1JARcGopXBiXVQBCMwBxU3eFNZYw941xltMZtBpqocTr8hOXQrkl0QZAVJkpmfSlctSxXjtjQ-6Vjx3RWWSedWbVQmuboemtjNcV-FIx4/?imgmax=800" width="457" height="608"></a></p> <p>Clara’s costume was inspired by a pattern, <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-7933-childs-cape-costumes.aspx">Simplicity 1769</a>. I made her a short cape with 3 eyeballs on pipe-cleaners. The rest of the costume consisted of a comfortable baby outfit: onesie, skirt and tights, all handmade. I found a pair of florescent green knee-high socks at Target and turned them into baby tights. They were sooo easy! Hopefully I’ll come up with a quick tutorial for them soon. </p> <p> <a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-wKitMVavAjQ/UJr2wl8KDpI/AAAAAAAAExY/JxgVFjWcqyQ/s1600-h/halloween2%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="halloween2" border="0" alt="halloween2" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-YPIBasREGTc/UJr2xfgyIaI/AAAAAAAAExg/KP_8AeeHCLY/halloween2_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="399" height="597"></a></p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-cg_LI7EAOmk/UJr2x8pSMvI/AAAAAAAAExo/ivBkCBbfZJQ/s1600-h/IMGP6473%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="IMGP6473" border="0" alt="IMGP6473" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-xjdnAu-N_io/UJr2ygndYiI/AAAAAAAAExw/yjbClFLQVp8/IMGP6473_thumb%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="561" height="375"></a></p> <p>Space Ghost was my crowning achievement. Brian’s such a good sport for putting up with a one-piece, back-zippered full body double knit costume. I used <a href="http://mccallpattern.mccall.com/m6475-products-15245.php?page_id=907">McCalls 6475</a> for the basic idea and added the feet, which I totally made up and it turned out great! The comparison pictures were taken the day after Halloween, and he had left his red cuffs in a bathroom somewhere! Oh well…it was awesome while it lasted ;)</p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-wlt_IZNe0aM/UJr2zSW0SUI/AAAAAAAAEx4/hMVBB5U_yAI/s1600-h/IMGP6468edit%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: block; float: none; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left-width: 0px; margin-right: auto" title="IMGP6468edit" border="0" alt="IMGP6468edit" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-PvdWm1fFRXE/UJr20rB5y6I/AAAAAAAAEyA/4UF93fpSkc0/IMGP6468edit_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="381" height="569"></a></p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-jYbuMjAUDKM/UJr21bJu3RI/AAAAAAAAEyI/cxFgCeC6e0o/s1600-h/cast%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="cast" border="0" alt="cast" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-xYpZ7n-cKMI/UJr217VddPI/AAAAAAAAEyQ/xjjy8F7jlRo/cast_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="259" height="195"></a><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-e4wB3yYiBBc/UJr22l48X2I/AAAAAAAAEyY/cesQElHrOII/s1600-h/DSC_0001%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="DSC_0001" border="0" alt="DSC_0001" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-Gd0QeuW_KkM/UJr23dmyBaI/AAAAAAAAEyg/vFIcJXK5Cqo/DSC_0001_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="257" height="194"></a> </p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-PMWpb5Rkf2A/UJr233ef9NI/AAAAAAAAEyo/11HdE4C5loM/s1600-h/SGPowerRays%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="SGPowerRays" border="0" alt="SGPowerRays" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-i4h4zac8l4k/UJr24vhr_dI/AAAAAAAAEyw/dAJzu4RZejI/SGPowerRays_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="257" height="165"></a><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-qtTSjaQzXPY/UJr25INeLII/AAAAAAAAEy4/4rMYjDKemHI/s1600-h/DSC_0003%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="DSC_0003" border="0" alt="DSC_0003" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-198eZgZd4WI/UJr25qzomDI/AAAAAAAAEzA/QSBC23XV22Q/DSC_0003_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="286" height="165"></a> </p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-4rNz717w52I/UJr26WOD5WI/AAAAAAAAEzI/WISzEf_OhkI/s1600-h/space%252520ghost%25255B5%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="space ghost" border="0" alt="space ghost" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-KnZs9-tl0jA/UJr26xT6C7I/AAAAAAAAEzQ/BHMEpIZ43uA/space%252520ghost_thumb%25255B3%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="259" height="326"></a><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-Xb1hxXMnVZ4/UJr27S6ElxI/AAAAAAAAEzY/TyD3Oju51LE/s1600-h/DSC_0005%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px" title="DSC_0005" border="0" alt="DSC_0005" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-5inahBlHx5g/UJr28IJY8UI/AAAAAAAAEzg/Pn9ww-0uLfI/DSC_0005_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="221" height="327"></a></p> <p align="left">As is typical, mommy’s costume got left for last and wasn’t exactly what I had envisioned…the starry headband was the best part Just some wire and felt stars on a dollar store headband. He wanted to be a Pteranodon, specifically he wanted to be a turquoise one. Since I finished his costume 2 weeks early I had enough time to make costumes for the rest of the family.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-xPz35IJpwpE/UJGjevobiHI/AAAAAAAAKaI/PeIaH7mlpGE/s1600-h/461_10151234048594490_1687412701_n%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="461_10151234048594490_1687412701_n" border="0" alt="461_10151234048594490_1687412701_n" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-OMbNA4orlL0/UJGjfC4g_rI/AAAAAAAAKaQ/HewvCfIicfI/461_10151234048594490_1687412701_n_thumb%25255B8%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="538" height="801"></a></p> <p>That being said my sewing machine broke about 2 weeks ago so I had to camp out at Haley’s house and use her machine to get them all done.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-CqVR3_FTUw4/UJGjgKTPf5I/AAAAAAAAKaY/QjgfeM6pK2U/s1600-h/_DSC0282%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="_DSC0282" border="0" alt="_DSC0282" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-oiIayltJVRw/UJGjg2LkrLI/AAAAAAAAKag/9ZLMLjiKslA/_DSC0282_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="513" height="772"></a><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-4q4afGPsHPY/UJGjhfVuUtI/AAAAAAAAKao/KuIRgr3tSg4/s1600-h/374033_10151234045539490_1174666794_n%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="374033_10151234045539490_1174666794_n" border="0" alt="374033_10151234045539490_1174666794_n" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-ltwvN7lg9qw/UJGjiMwxdMI/AAAAAAAAKaw/mwKV-uXmTOY/374033_10151234045539490_1174666794_n_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="430"></a></p> <p>I’m really proud of our costumes but Haley, as always, stole the show. (closed)That’s right we are hosting an i-spy swap. The details are listed below.<br />
Whenever my mother comes to visit she brings fabric to make a quilt top. During her last visit she finished with a week to spare and wanted to make another. I pulled out my box of i-spy squares from a couple of swaps hosted by Care of Obsessively Stitching. My mom was instantly hooked. <br />
<a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-DIafVJEXii4/UHxEyPdFKPI/AAAAAAAAKXg/DQzsx3Y-UdQ/s1600-h/_DSC0045%25255B22%25255D.jpg"><img alt="_DSC0045" border="0" height="428" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-4s3fuvW2RpM/UHxEz1UaKOI/AAAAAAAAKXo/V-8ICDugMRU/_DSC0045_thumb%25255B14%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="_DSC0045" width="644" /></a><br />
She wants to make another one and says what is the point of having a daughter with a craft blog if you can’t take advantage of it. So we are hosting an i-spy swap!<br />
<u><strong>THE BASICS:</strong></u><strong><br />Mail 200 I-Spy squares to me by December 1st.</strong> <br />
<strong>Get 200 I-Spy squares back, all different, by December 15th.</strong> <br />
<em><strong><span style="color: red;">PLEASE be sure you can meet the deadlines BEFORE you sign up!</span></strong></em> <br />
<strong><u>THE DETAILS:</u></strong> <br />
<strong>1.</strong> The first 36 people to comment are in. [If you live outside the U.S., no problem -- but please mail your fabrics a little earlier so there's plenty of time to meet the deadline!] <br />
<strong>2.</strong> Cut 20 4" squares out of each of 10 different novelty print fabrics. A 1/4-yard cut or fat quarter will get you 20 4" squares, so you will be purchasing a total of about 2 1/2 yards of fabric. This is NOTHING when you think about all the different squares you will be getting back! <br />
<strong>3.</strong> In order to avoid duplicates, everyone will need to search out unusual or obscure prints. Look for things that aren't available at chain stores. <em>But, please, pick FUN ones!</em> If you love it, the other swappers will love it too! <br />
<strong>4.</strong> Remember that we are looking for fabric with objects on it, not printy-prints. (A fabric with FLOWERS on it is very different from a FLORAL PRINT.) <br />
<strong>5.</strong> No "licensed" prints: No Disney, Dora, L.A. Lakers, etc. <br />
<strong>6.</strong> <span style="color: red;">Remember seam allowances!</span> Be sure you can tell what you are looking at within a 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" square. Nobody wants only half of an object in their square -- cut them well! (Depending on your fabric choice, you may need to buy more than 1/4 yard in order to get an object into each cut square.) <br />
<em>If you want to join me in this obsession, leave a comment here that<strong><br /><span style="color: red;">includes your email address</span></strong><span style="color: red;">!!<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-aTiNZJH3cx8/UHxE1AO3FvI/AAAAAAAAKXw/7GL52WDxcwk/s1600-h/_DSC0075%25255B14%25255D.jpg"><img align="right" alt="_DSC0075" border="0" height="244" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-qNbD_p9AWoE/UHxE2C0TD1I/AAAAAAAAKX4/PGC3ZDwS-Y0/_DSC0075_thumb%25255B11%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; display: inline; float: right; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="_DSC0075" width="232" /></a></span></em> <br />
<strong><em>Remember: The FIRST 36 who comment are IN!</em></strong><br />
*IF by chance we don't make it to the full double swap,<br />
we'll do a single swap with the first 18 and save the rest<br />
of the swappers for the next swap.<br />
SERIOUS SWAPPERS ONLY...<br />
Please read the guidelines before signing up! <br />

Many of the groups members own a sewing machine but not too many sew on a regular basis. So we picked a project that even a complete beginner can finish in an evening. Everyone sewed a pillowcase or two to be donated to <a href="http://conkerrcancer.org/home/" target="_blank">ConKerr Cancer</a>. Their goal is to give a bright cheery pillowcase to every seriously ill child in North America by 2015. That night we made 20 pillowcases to donate!</p> <p>ConKerr has <a href="http://conkerrcancer.org/pillowdirections.html" target="_blank">directions</a> to make the pillowcases on their website. If you need a more visual tutorial I recommend checking out <a href="http://www.danamadeit.com/2008/07/tutorial-conkerr-cancer-pillowcases.html" target="_blank">this post by Dana</a>. </p> <p><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-47FGyofImlU/UG8xFyy1yHI/AAAAAAAAKIk/0feaaXkhKaQ/s1600-h/_DSC00264.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="_DSC0026" border="0" alt="_DSC0026" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-ZiS92BOFiLA/UG8xGkSBorI/AAAAAAAAKIs/WfwRKolnNC0/_DSC0026_thumb1.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="429"></a></p> <p>I hope you are inspired to host your own sewing night. </p> <p><img alt="Ruth" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_sw09_UT9jqE/TEuoNr0NQUI/AAAAAAAAC_w/OWzaznom5w0/Ruth_thumb%5B3%5D.jpg?imgmax=800"></p> <div class="blogger-post-footer">Thanks for subscribing</div>Ruth @ Hammer and Threadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15532776517977223810noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4400651514450791549.post-91693493753551452732012-09-19T17:58:00.000-05:002012-09-19T17:58:00.451-05:00The Right FeetAsher really loved his <a href="http://hammerandthread.blogspot.com/2012/04/orange-shoes.html" target="_blank">gorilla shoes</a> (which sadly don’t fit any more). I loved that he could put them on by himself which was very helpful while I was hugely pregnant at the time. However he was constantly putting them on the wrong feet. I wish I could blame it on his youth but his father would put them on the wrong feet too. So when the time came to by the next round of shoes I pulled out my fabric paint again and came up with my brilliant solution.<br />
<a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-XUDJPon9HmM/UFj8mijoGDI/AAAAAAAAKF8/p3K5PDlrHEc/s1600-h/_DSC0065%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img alt="_DSC0065" border="0" height="429" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-zwoaNti_GtU/UFSwLeeJyII/AAAAAAAAKGE/CZRb9QgMaAg/_DSC0065_thumb%25255B8%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="_DSC0065" width="644" /></a><br />
On the exterior of the shoe I painted matching symbols. They are placed were the aches of his feet will be. Now when he gets his shoes he makes the symbols touch and then puts them on the ground and slips is feet inside. I rarely have to ask him to fix them any more. <br />
<a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-T7ZHRgUTZyc/UFSwL_ZcZBI/AAAAAAAAKGI/1fXah2ya74M/s1600-h/_DSC0063%25255B7%25255D.jpg"><img alt="_DSC0063" border="0" height="429" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj62swcrOqN-fZ0rnOQ6Q39VQCMLtPX6Da3sYAXNaJqMOsYl-1m2QcsHmP278JQCC08zO9i8Jh8pFFw30T6jZ476CEazXsxHVYoXmHBoo5fpcrepmfB6JsawMUx1_Xuf2HwbPhE155ptAU/?imgmax=800" style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; display: inline; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px;" title="_DSC0063" width="644" /></a><br />
I cut the symbols out of contact paper and carefully painted the shapes. Once dry, I used a fabric paint pen to outline the stars.<br />
This simple solution has cut down the time it takes us to get out of the house significantly. Let me know if you give it a try.<br />

At our last discussion we threw her a little baby shower. My friend Liasa made some freezer paper stenciled onesies and I decided to take them one step further (as I am prone to do.)</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-j5-Jtdj9TY0/UFIudaRGLBI/AAAAAAAAJyM/hot007mJtn4/s1600-h/_DSC0014%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="_DSC0014" border="0" alt="_DSC0014" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-_R-Yg3xtkoc/UFIud_xRa1I/AAAAAAAAJyU/aQONeyldv4E/_DSC0014_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="628" height="484"></a></p> <p>I made a pair of baby lounge pants (pattern coming soon) to match one pair. So we’ve been teaming up to make the gifts. These went to Logan. We used the pattern from <a href="http://obsessivelystitching.blogspot.com/2009/01/make-it-for-you.html" target="_blank">Obsessively Stitching</a>.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-J8TqbJevuuo/T_tUqS2tuZI/AAAAAAAAIyM/pmvucN_ut-E/s1600-h/DSC_06902.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px; display: inline" title="DSC_0690" alt="DSC_0690" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-YqyF5djkY-I/T_tUq3ZvtyI/AAAAAAAAIyU/07kMEYqDWAg/DSC_0690_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" width="640" height="425"></a></p> <p><img alt="signature" align="left" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-Qo_9uyJjR0w/T1ufTEPwXgI/AAAAAAAAB4Q/NdjhGalDW6c/signature_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800"> <font size="7" face="Kristen ITC">&</font><img alt="Ruth" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_sw09_UT9jqE/TEuoNr0NQUI/AAAAAAAAC_w/OWzaznom5w0/Ruth_thumb%5B3%5D.jpg?imgmax=800"></p> <div class="blogger-post-footer">Thanks for subscribing</div>Ruth @ Hammer and Threadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15532776517977223810noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4400651514450791549.post-16981135692300200802012-05-06T12:53:00.000-05:002012-05-06T12:53:00.529-05:00Diaper Cakes<p>As more babies have entered the mom’s group so have <a href="http://hammerandthread.blogspot.com/2011/10/diaper-cake-tutorial.html" target="_blank">more diaper cakes</a>. This top one was made for baby Ruben. Haley made the argyle Octopus out of a pair of socks.</p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-zrkgF6CqEws/T6VpEU4kWrI/AAAAAAAAHwU/cwfUC9GT9qs/s1600-h/DSC_08299.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="DSC_0829" border="0" alt="DSC_0829" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-kLAKA9vyEA4/T6VpE_07d8I/AAAAAAAAHwc/d8oaDhNVdmk/DSC_0829_thumb5.jpg?imgmax=800" width="514" height="772"></a></p> <p>This owl diaper cake was made for our friend Liasa who is having a little boy at the end of the month. She loves owls and purple so we did our best to “boy” that up. </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-V2OjRJ5_gds/T6VpFWy44fI/AAAAAAAAHwk/G9sIZY7OSBI/s1600-h/DSC_020916.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="DSC_0209" border="0" alt="DSC_0209" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-h6nuZmbVn1Q/T6VpGGp0N-I/AAAAAAAAHws/sVOZcFbGuh0/DSC_0209_thumb10.jpg?imgmax=800" width="514" height="772"></a></p> <p>The Cake topper was a <a href="http://hammerandthread.blogspot.com/2010/07/owl-stuffies-tutorial.html" target="_blank">little owl</a> sitting in a nest. I used the <a href="http://hammerandthread.blogspot.com/2010/07/owl-stuffies-tutorial.html" target="_blank">owl stuffie tutorial</a> but shrunk down the pattern.</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-OEVaT1f16Ko/T6VpGhKS0GI/AAAAAAAAHw0/xrkTzQ4giME/s1600-h/DSC_004112.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="DSC_0041" border="0" alt="DSC_0041" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-HJTJFFdCTZg/T6VpJAXiszI/AAAAAAAAHw8/cbFG_Ssp2lM/DSC_0041_thumb13.jpg?imgmax=800" width="486" height="484"></a></p> <p> The nest was made by making a tube out of some contact paper with the sticky side out. Then I rolled it in scraps of fabric and string and bits of yarn. I used a zig zag stitch to add some larger pieces on the outside and securing everything in place. I did not trim my threads neatly. Lastly I connected the narrow ends to make a circle and stitched that in place too. I punched a couple of holes in the bottom so it could be tied onto the top of the cake and then the owl was nestled inside.</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-8ZE_qbHP2CU/T6VpJtthejI/AAAAAAAAHxE/v5t52ALovCU/s1600-h/DSC_0050%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="DSC_0050" border="0" alt="DSC_0050" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-Gwaaz75PpjU/T6VpKdoOwEI/AAAAAAAAHxM/nD_imofn_0Y/DSC_0050_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="429"></a></p> <p>In Liasa’s diaper cake we included some hand knit baby socks, burpcloths, baprons, washcloths and a thing that will strap over a door latch so you can close the door quietly.</p> <p align="center"><a href="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-ruXGpyruhGQ/T6VpLHPKdvI/AAAAAAAAHxU/-gaOtPHXGgQ/s1600-h/DSC_0051.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="DSC_0051" border="0" alt="DSC_0051" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-ZMEawI9s1tU/T6VpLoQXueI/AAAAAAAAHxc/nn2AbqqyUCs/DSC_0051_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="109" height="162"></a><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-6BPl5m8rhCE/T6VpMVH8EUI/AAAAAAAAHxk/khL0pKn0hCs/s1600-h/DSC_00524.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-right-width: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="DSC_0052" border="0" alt="DSC_0052" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-UIY4TBQyDlQ/T6VpM2CUsfI/AAAAAAAAHxs/5AbKFb6rnJs/DSC_0052_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" width="244" height="163"></a><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-RUIQ0P63J4Y/T6VpNe2WS0I/AAAAAAAAHx0/DG-e1okbhWM/s1600-h/DSC_0053.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="DSC_0053" border="0" alt="DSC_0053" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/--M40a1lFclU/T6VpN3oqR3I/AAAAAAAAHx8/astRAmY2anQ/DSC_0053_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="108" height="161"></a></p> <p align="left">We can’t wait to meet the little guy. </p> <p align="left"><img style="display: inline; float: left" alt="signature" align="left" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-Qo_9uyJjR0w/T1ufTEPwXgI/AAAAAAAAB4Q/NdjhGalDW6c/signature_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800"> <font size="7" face="Kristen ITC">&</font><img alt="Ruth" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/_sw09_UT9jqE/TEuoNr0NQUI/AAAAAAAAC_w/OWzaznom5w0/Ruth_thumb%5B3%5D.jpg?imgmax=800"></p> <div class="blogger-post-footer">Thanks for subscribing</div>Ruth @ Hammer and Threadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15532776517977223810noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4400651514450791549.post-46550420573297894262012-04-11T16:50:00.001-05:002012-04-11T16:50:51.130-05:00Simple Coconut Curry with Rice<p>A couple months back, my hubby watched the documentary “Forks over Knives,” which discusses a plant-based, whole-foods diet and the benefits therein. He decided to give it a try for the month of February, having his blood work checked at the beginning and end of the month. Since I’m nursing, I decided to just roll with it when I could and continue my normal diet other times. However, I soon realized that the meals he was cooking were amazing and delicious and I had to be involved! I didn’t change over completely but we started to dabble with vegetarian and vegan recipes from cookbooks that Ruth loaned me from her vegetarian days. </p> <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-nqm55QRXlpY/T4X8mqlLTkI/AAAAAAAACRc/s0oK536zECA/s1600-h/IMGP4372%25255B13%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="IMGP4372" border="0" alt="IMGP4372" src="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-Yaaco4Oc3WM/T4X8nGnpeXI/AAAAAAAACRk/YISeG4D6jM0/IMGP4372_thumb%25255B9%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="430"></a> </p> <p>Soon, I was scouring the internets for new recipes with which to experiment. It was a lot of fun! I really love curries and found 2 recipes via Pinterest that I blended together for an excellent coconut curry. The <a href="http://www.canyoustayfordinner.com/2011/02/19/simple-coconut-curry-sauce/">first recipe</a>, from Can You Stay For Dinner, was the primary sauce inspiration, then I just added some ideas from the <a href="http://www.thegoodfoodbully.com/2011/02/vegan-coconut-curry-on-budget.html">second recipe</a>, via The Good Food Bully. </p> <p><strong>For the Sauce:</strong></p> <p>1 cup coconut milk</p> <p>3 tablespoons soy sauce <p>2 tablespoons rice vinegar <p>2 tablespoons brown sugar <p>2 teaspoons sesame oil <p>1 teaspoon curry powder <p>1 teaspoon cumin <p>1 teaspoon turmeric <p>salt and pepper to taste</p> <p>2 clove garlic, minced <p>1-2 teaspoons fresh grated ginger (depending on your ginger preference) <p>1/2 teaspoon Sriracha hot chili sauce (optional) <p>2 teaspoons cornstarch, to thicken <p>Mix all ingredients, except cornstarch, in saucepan and bring to simmer. The sauce will thicken on it’s own a bit. If it needs a little more thickness, just before you’re ready to serve add the cornstarch and simmer for a minute (to eliminate lumps, mix cornstarch with a small bit of cold water until smooth, then add to the simmering sauce). <p><a href="http://lh3.ggpht.com/-qbcZp_5Wz_U/T4X8n71mf-I/AAAAAAAACRs/jc-7k9KrDXg/s1600-h/IMGP4364%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="IMGP4364" border="0" alt="IMGP4364" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-pGqVSJtBTxs/T4X8oZPP0JI/AAAAAAAACR0/FyK3q6wr57M/IMGP4364_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="430"></a> <p><strong>For the body of the dish:</strong> <p>Veggies you love (I used bell pepper, onion, cauliflower, broccoli, snow peas, and carrots.)</p> <p>Peanut or Olive oil, for sauteeing</p> <p>1 can Chickpeas (aka Garbanzo beans), drained and rinsed</p> <p>2-3 cups Cooked Rice (whatever kind you like. We use brown or basmati)</p> <p>Chop up the veggies and saute in a bit of oil until tender. You can start with the onions and carrots first if you like more tenderness on those. When the veggies are nearly tender, add the chickpeas and heat thoroughly. </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-LmSVBd_QhMI/T4X8pHU73rI/AAAAAAAACR8/unQit04geB0/s1600-h/IMGP4361%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="IMGP4361" border="0" alt="IMGP4361" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-S3NnWWXfBvM/T4X8pi-FYXI/AAAAAAAACSE/XGc8fnJOEyc/IMGP4361_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="430"></a> </p> <p>Serve the curry in a bowl, rice on bottom…</p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-MFbYMpxYtrw/T4X8qSsanvI/AAAAAAAACSM/GZ113yWH-gs/s1600-h/IMGP4365%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="IMGP4365" border="0" alt="IMGP4365" src="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-YUC8y2PiY3k/T4X8qwzUJlI/AAAAAAAACSU/6Vgzm60pB5U/IMGP4365_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="430"></a> </p> <p>then veggies…</p> <p><a href="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-GuDPLngKHH8/T4X8rm02O0I/AAAAAAAACSc/yMtbikT6MkU/s1600-h/IMGP4368%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="IMGP4368" border="0" alt="IMGP4368" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-ENtwN9qgs9g/T4X8sDiC98I/AAAAAAAACSk/on4ScKa9GMk/IMGP4368_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="430"></a> </p> <p>topped with sauce. </p> <p><a href="http://lh5.ggpht.com/-0bjkpi3kuyw/T4X8s5XwcyI/AAAAAAAACSs/iM8rqFxnEMM/s1600-h/IMGP4372%25255B16%25255D.jpg"><img style="border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px" title="IMGP4372" border="0" alt="IMGP4372" src="http://lh4.ggpht.com/-8ccVZT1q8UQ/T4X8tncgjXI/AAAAAAAACS0/Mr_hWD0567Q/IMGP4372_thumb%25255B12%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="430"></a> </p> <p>That’s it! Super simple and sooo yummy. </p> <p>We decided that with vegan cooking, a good sauce is key. I love vegetables, but plain steamed veggies for every meal would definitely get boring…so a yummy sauce can keep things interesting. So Cam got 3 new long-sleeves for “winter”….cause, yeah, we don’t really have winter in Texas but he’ll get some use out of them.<br />

The guitar dragon and Ramones shirts were made using <a href="http://www.simplicity.com/p-5387-boys-mens-loungewear-dog-top.aspx" target="_blank">Simplicity pattern #2318</a>. It’s actually a pajama pattern, but I really liked the contrast shoulder and it worked great for a mix’n’match knit shirt. <br />
The hooded Johnny Socko shirt (which just so happens to be an old shirt of mine from high school….ahhh, memories) was made using <a href="http://www.lilblueboo.com/2010/02/celebrate-boy-perfect-boy-gift-and.html">Lil Blue Boo’s hooded shirt pattern</a>. It’s a classic pattern that Ruth and I love…I’m sure we’ll continue to make a closet load of them.<br />

The sleeves on the Simplicity patterned shirts are way too long but I'll fix that later. Cam doesn't mind and he still looks super cute ;) <br />

His only request was that they be orange. I wanted something he could put on completely by himself. He has some velcro shoes but the tongues always seems to end up smooshed into the toes. I found these at Target and Ash immediately rejected them until I told him I would paint them orange. </p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDCOK9X2fHb-6wEZEkQ9asg0d0v-iCCO0WGQRuzZYVwx-XghUA5IoOfAI0SVQvy0AaB_nYgUw1P7o0C2icnfUwCou6vZeUXExjSwbOBKNxKLu6MGq-8Zk0euxiyJci84PBSfGftNjGlgI/s1600-h/DSC_0031%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img style="background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; border-left: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; padding-top: 0px" title="DSC_0031" border="0" alt="DSC_0031" src="http://lh6.ggpht.com/-2nIhE--4W5o/T3tKgKsmvHI/AAAAAAAAHas/uz6XZQJjOkk/DSC_0031_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="644" height="429"></a></p> <p>I love how they came out.
